Contraindications for a Facial
A facial should not be performed if you have any of the following:
ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Active cold sores, fever blisters, or herpes simplex outbreak
- Active bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infections (including impetigo, ringworm, conjunctivitis)
- Open wounds, cuts, burns, or severe skin irritation
- Recent facial surgery or stitches (doctor clearance required)
- Severe sunburn
- Contagious illness (flu, COVID-19, etc.)
- Allergic reaction or dermatitis in the treatment area
- Use of isotretinoin (Accutane®) within the last 12 months
- Recent Botox® or filler injections (within 2 weeks)
Pre-Treatment Guidelines
- Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin if possible.
- Discontinue retinoids, AHA/BHA acids, benzoyl peroxide, and other strong active products 48–72 hours prior to avoid sensitivity.
- Avoid facial waxing, threading, or depilatories on the face for 48–72 hours before treatment.
- Skip tanning, sunburn, or prolonged sun exposure for at least 48 hours prior.
- Avoid chemical peels, microneedling, or laser treatments within 1–2 weeks of your appointment.
- Stay well-hydrated leading up to your service for optimal results.
- Inform your esthetician of any allergies, sensitivities, or new skincare products.
RELATIVE CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Recent cosmetic procedures: chemical peels, microneedling, laser, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion (within 1–2 weeks)
- Recent waxing or threading on the face (within 48–72 hours)
- Use of topical retinoids, exfoliants (AHA/BHA), benzoyl peroxide (discontinue 3–7 days prior depending on sensitivity)
- Current antibiotic use (increases photosensitivity and irritation risk)
- Rosacea flare-ups or highly sensitized skin
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (certain products or modalities may be restricted)
- Diagnosed skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis (if active in the treatment area)
- Allergies to skincare ingredients, fragrances, or botanicals—discuss with your esthetician
Post-Care Instructions
- Keep your routine gentle for 24–48 hours—use only a mild cleanser, hydrating serum, and nourishing moisturizer.
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, or other strong actives for 2–3 days after your facial.
- Skip heavy sweating, hot yoga, steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs for 24 hours.
- Avoid waxing or depilatories on the face for 48–72 hours.
- No tanning or direct sun exposure—apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 daily to protect your newly treated skin.
- Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration and maximize your glow
