Pre/Post Procedure Instructions for a Chemical Peel

To ensure optimal results and maintain skin barrier integrity, please follow the guidelines below prior to your facial treatment.

7 Days Prior

  • Discontinue use of all exfoliating products, including:
      • Retinoids/retinol (tretinoin/Retin-A®, adapalene, tazarotene)

      • AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic)

      • Benzoyl peroxide or acne medicated spot treatments

      • Scrubs, at-home dermaplaning tools, or exfoliating brushes/devices

    • Avoid waxing, dermaplaning, threading, or depilatory creams on the area to be treated.

    • Avoid self-tanner and tanning beds.

5-7 Days Prior

  • Avoid extensive sun exposure; do not arrive with sunburned skin.
    • Discontinue use of retinoid prescriptions unless instructed otherwise by your medical provider.

    • If using topical acne medications (Clindamycin, Differin®, etc.), pause unless otherwise directed.

24-48 Hours Prior

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that create excessive heat or sweating.
    • Do not undergo any other facial treatments (microdermabrasion, microneedling, laser, etc.).

    • Hydrate well and maintain normal skincare—gentle cleanser + moisturizer only.

Day of Chemical Peel

  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, SPF, oils, or heavy moisturizers.
    • Inform your provider of:

      • Any newly prescribed medications

      • Recent illness, injury, or cold sore activity

      • Any change in skincare routine

What to Expect

  • Tightness, dryness, or redness may occur

  • Light flaking or peeling typically begins 2–7 days post-peel (do not pick or pull at peeling skin)

Your skin will be in an active renewal phase. Treat it gently and follow these instructions exactly for the best healing and results.

The First 72 Hours

Use only the products recommended by your provider.

  • Do NOT use active products:

    • Retinoids / retinol

    • AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic)

    • Benzoyl peroxide

    • Exfoliating scrubs, enzymes, or tools (including washcloths)

  • Avoid heat and friction:

    • No workouts or sweating

    • No saunas, hot tubs, or steam rooms

    • Avoid hot water directly on the face

Absolutely Do Not Pick or Peel

  • Allow skin to shed naturally.

  • Picking can result in scarring or hyperpigmentation.

Hydration + Barrier Care

AM & PM:

  1. Gentle cleanser

  2. Nourishing/hydrating serum (if recommended)

  3. Moisturizer

Sun Protection (Non-negotiable)

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily

  • Reapply SPF every 2 hours when outside

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 7–14 days

UV exposure during peeling can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun protection is critical.

After Day 7

  • Gradually reintroduce active products per provider guidance.

  • Resume normal skincare once all peeling/flaking has resolved.
